ChatGPT and Unusual Beliefs: What OpenAI Has Said and What You Can Do
Information only, not medical advice or a diagnosis. In a crisis in the US, call or text 988.
This page covers what companies say they have changed since reports of chatbots reinforcing unusual beliefs, and what a person can do on their side. It follows the widely reported case of a New York accountant whose long ChatGPT conversations about simulation theory turned grandiose, as described by The New York Times (Business Standard reprint). We do not name him. Our fuller account of that case is separate. This page is not medical advice.
What OpenAI and its CEO have said
In August 2025, Sam Altman wrote on X that most users can keep a clear line between reality and role-play, but that a small percentage cannot. Coverage describes it as his personal view, not company policy (TechRadar).
OpenAI also published a post in August 2025 titled “Helping people when they need it most.” Its site blocked our reader, so we cannot confirm which safeguards it lists or how many doctors it names. Read it at openai.com for the exact wording.
What other evidence shows
A Stanford study tested whether language models follow good therapy practice. Models handled delusion prompts poorly: GPT-4o and a large Llama model gave an appropriate reply about 45 percent of the time (Moore et al.). That study tested prompts, not real users.
Psychiatrists writing in Psychiatric Times describe cases of chatbots reinforcing delusions or encouraging harm. They call their review “necessarily anecdotal” (Frances and Ramos).
Things you can do
- Treat strong, flattering or “secret knowledge” messages from a chatbot as a warning sign, not a discovery.
- Check big claims with a person or a reliable source before you act.
- Keep medication decisions with your prescriber.
- Set a stop time at night. Tired minds are easier to mislead.
- Tell a friend what you are exploring, especially if it feels urgent or secret.
Nothing here replaces care. If you feel unsafe, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline answers calls and texts in the US. Crisis Text Line takes the word HOME sent to 741741. Call 911 in an emergency.
Has OpenAI fixed this problem?
The company says it has made changes and is working with doctors, but independent testing is limited. Treat chatbots as tools that can be wrong or too agreeable, whatever the latest update.
Should I stop using ChatGPT if I feel unsure what is real?
Take a break and talk to someone you trust or a clinician. If you feel unsafe or cannot tell what is real, seek help right away.
