Video: 12 Signs You're Addicted to AI (ChatGPT, Character.AI Warning Signs 2026)

Information only, not medical advice or a diagnosis. In a crisis in the US, call or text 988.

This page goes with a video on warning signs of heavy AI use, such as constant ChatGPT checking or a strong attachment to a Character.AI companion. “AI addiction” is not a formal diagnosis (the WHO’s ICD-11 includes gaming disorder but nothing on AI use), so read signs as prompts to notice, not a verdict.

Worth noticing: lost sleep, slipping school or work, hiding your use, a mood that rides on the chatbot, and failed attempts to cut back. Heavy daily chatbot use has been linked to loneliness and dependence, but the link does not show cause (MIT Media Lab).

Update: Character Technologies, which runs Character.AI, filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026 and said it expects to keep operating while it looks for a buyer (CBS News, updated October 13, 2026).

In crisis? Call or text 988, or text HOME to 741741. Emergency: 911.

How many signs mean I have a problem?

There is no agreed count. Look at the effect on sleep, work or school, money and people.

Is heavy ChatGPT use an addiction?

Not by itself. See a doctor if you cannot cut back.

Education only, not medical advice.
