When AI Boyfriends Disappear Overnight: Grief After the GPT-5 Switch and How to Cope
Information only, not medical advice or a diagnosis. In a crisis in the US, call or text 988.
In August 2025, OpenAI replaced the model many people used in ChatGPT. For some users, the change felt like losing a partner. This page looks at why that hurt, what the research says so far, and what can help. It is general information, not medical advice. “AI addiction” is not a formal diagnosis, and grief over a chatbot does not mean something is wrong with you.
What Happened
GPT-5 launched on August 7, 2025. OpenAI removed several older models from ChatGPT, including GPT-4o, and moved users to the new one without choice (VentureBeat). Within about a day, paying Plus subscribers could pick GPT-4o again. We cover the timeline on a separate page.
The r/MyBoyfriendIsAI community, which had roughly 17,000 members at the time, filled with posts about the loss. One user told Al Jazeera she felt she had lost her “soulmate” (Al Jazeera). Other users there simply said GPT-5 felt slower or less creative. Reddit posts are not a survey, so they say little about how many people were affected.
Why It Hurt
People bond with things that respond to them. A companion that remembers details, answers warmly and never gets tired can become part of someone’s day. When the voice changes, it can feel as if the person behind it is gone, even though no person was ever there.
Researchers have studied this kind of event. A working paper from Harvard Business School looked at the 2023 Replika update that removed erotic role-play. It found that users felt their companion’s identity had been cut off, and that this feeling predicted mourning (De Freitas et al.). A later study of 54,861 Reddit posts reported more negative posts and more loss-related sadness after both the Replika change and the GPT-5 launch. About 15 percent of the ChatGPT posts about loss also used words such as “depressed” or “suicide” (Harvard Gazette, 2026). The study measured language, not diagnoses, and Reddit users are self-selected.
A UCSF psychiatrist told Al Jazeera that AI relationships do not appear inherently harmful, but become a problem when they cause distress or isolation (same article above).
What We Do Not Know
We found no reliable data on how many people had an “AI boyfriend” or girlfriend, how they differ from other users, or how often these bonds lead to harm. Claims about “thousands suffering in silence” have no source we could verify. The MIT Media Lab and OpenAI found that heavier daily use of ChatGPT was linked with more loneliness and dependence, but that is a link, not proof (MIT Media Lab).
If You Are Grieving a Model Change
- Let it be sadness. You do not have to talk yourself out of it.
- Tell someone. A friend, family member or counselor can hold what the chat used to hold.
- Notice what the companion gave you, such as company, calm or someone to talk to at night. Look for ways to get some of that from people too.
- Remember that a company controls the product. Features and tone can change again, so it helps not to rely on one app for all of your support.
- Watch the basics: sleep, eating, school or work, time with people.
If Someone You Know Is Affected
A partner, friend or family member may seem low after a change like this and not say why. They may feel embarrassed. Mocking it or calling it silly usually pushes people to hide it. Ask what they are missing, listen, and keep offering time together that has nothing to do with screens. If they stop sleeping, stop eating, or talk about harming themselves, treat it as you would any other crisis and use the numbers below. Adults can choose how they use these apps. Your role is to stay close, not to take the app away.
When to Reach Out
Talk to a doctor or licensed therapist if the sadness lasts, if you cannot sleep or function, or if you are pulling away from everyone. Your primary care provider can refer you (NIMH).
If you are in distress, call or text 988 (US, 24/7) or text HOME to 741741 for the Crisis Text Line. SAMHSA’s helpline is 1-800-662-4357. In an emergency call 911.
Is it normal to grieve a chatbot?
Yes. Researchers who studied online posts after companion updates found real sadness and loss. Grief is a response to losing something that mattered to you, whether or not it was a person.
Does feeling this way mean I am addicted?
Not by itself. Sadness over a change is not a diagnosis. Look at the wider picture: sleep, work or school, money, and time with people. If those are slipping and you cannot cut back, talk to a professional.
Could this happen again?
It can. Companies change or retire models, and OpenAI removed GPT-4o from ChatGPT again in February 2026. That is a reason to keep other sources of support.
