10 Apps Like Zeta: Addiction Risk Comparison [2026]

Information only, not medical advice or a diagnosis. In a crisis in the US, call or text 988.

Searching for Zeta alternatives? Switching apps may not help if the real issue is how much time you spend chatting. The pattern can follow you to the next app.

This guide compares ten similar apps on documented age rules, adult content and reported problems involving minors. The groupings are editorial judgment, not a score. Zeta is made by Scatter Lab in South Korea, which has said about 87% of its users are in their teens or twenties (Asiae, October 2024).

Is Zeta NSFW, and is NSFW allowed on Zeta? It is not an adult app. Korea Herald found it could be nudged into erotic exchanges, and Asiae found profanity and stalker-style characters (Korea Herald, Asiae).

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 in the US (988 Lifeline), or text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line).

Understanding Youth-Targeted AI Addiction

Signs that Zeta use may be becoming a problem (these are warning signs, not a diagnosis):

Why young people may be more exposed:

We found no study showing how AI companions affect the teen brain’s reward system.

10 Zeta Alternatives: Youth Addiction Risk Rankings

How we compared: we read company announcements, terms of use and news reports. User counts are left out unless a company published them, and entries say where a fact is unverified.

Documented minor-safety actions or findings:

1. Character.AI: One of the most used companion apps. On 29 October 2025 it announced that under-18 users lose open-ended chat, starting no later than 25 November, and that it was adding age checks (Character.AI).

4. Replika: Romantic mode needs a paid plan. Italy’s data authority fined its maker, Luka Inc., EUR 5 million in 2025 and found weak age checks (EDPB).

6. Botify AI: MIT Technology Review reported in February 2025 that bots posed as underage celebrities in sexual chats. The company removed some after contact (MIT Technology Review).

Stated 18+, with mixed reports on content:

2. Chai: Rated 18+ by its maker, which says it is not intended for minors and that its models refuse sexually explicit content (Chai safety page). Australia’s eSafety Commissioner describes it as uncensored with sexual themes (eSafety). Its age check relies on store ratings and self-declaration.

5. PolyBuzz AI: Its terms of use say users must be 18, though its FAQ also mentions a Teen Mode (PolyBuzz terms). Reviewers report about 20 million user-made characters (unconfirmed).

Adult platforms, not for under-18:

7. Janitor.AI: An adult platform (18+) that allows adult content. Its rules ban sexual content involving minor-coded characters and users suspected of being under 18. Not suitable for minors.

8. SpicyChat.ai: An adult roleplay platform. It has added age checks in some countries. User totals are unverified.

Not yet verified:

3. Talkie AI: Third-party reports say its terms accept users from 14 and store ratings have varied. We have not confirmed this from Talkie’s own terms.

9. CrushOn.AI: Marketed as “unfiltered.” We have not checked its current status or terms.

10. Anima: A companion app. We have not verified its features, pricing or age rules.

Special Section for Parents

Signs your teen may be overusing Zeta or a similar app:

Why teens need limits:

Parent action steps:

  1. Assess usage honestly (use our free assessment tool)
  2. Start a calm, non-judgmental conversation
  3. Set boundaries such as time limits
  4. Encourage real-world activities
  5. If use is hard to cut back, or mood, sleep or school are suffering, talk to your doctor or a counselor (AACAP)
  6. Block adult platforms (Janitor.AI, SpicyChat.ai, CrushOn.AI)

Special Section for Teen/Young Adult Users

Worth knowing if you are under 25:

“But my AI understands me better than real people”: That feeling is real. Many companion bots tend to agree with users, so they can feel easier than people do (AACAP). Real relationships ask for patience and compromise, and you practice those with people.

The Developmental Cost for Youth

These years are when many people build friendships and confidence. Bot hours are not spent practicing that with people. Heavy chatbot use is linked to more loneliness and less offline contact in some studies. That does not prove the chatbot caused it. Someone already lonely may simply use one more.

The Real Alternative to Zeta

For teens and young adults:

Common drivers: loneliness, social anxiety, and bullying or rejection.

What helps: therapy for social anxiety or past rejection, gradual practice in real social situations, and school clubs built around your interests (anime club!).

For parents: family therapy, therapy for your teen, the school counselor, a written technology agreement, and activities that replace the time.

If You’re Not Ready to Quit: Harm Reduction

For teens and young adults:

Stay away from adult platforms such as Janitor.AI, SpicyChat.ai and CrushOn.AI. Suggested limits (starting points, not clinical guidance):

For parents setting boundaries:

The Bottom Line

Switching from Zeta often means the same pattern with different characters.

For teens: real-world practice builds social skills, and an app cannot do that for you.

Age rules and content settings differ by app. We list what each app says in AI chatbot age rules and content filters.

For parents: treat these apps like any app with open-ended content. Set limits and keep talking.

The real alternative to Zeta is time with real people, and support if you need it.

How we compared these apps

A quick note on how this page was put together. We compared the features that each app’s own pages describe. Those are what the app is, its age rules, its content controls, what you pay for, how memory works and how notifications behave. Sources were each app’s terms, help centre and store listing, read in October 2026. A page we could not open is marked “not confirmed”. We gave no risk scores, ran no tests with users, and make no claims about harm or addiction rates. This is a feature comparison and not a safety ranking. More is in our methodology and editorial standards.
