Seven Families Sue OpenAI Over ChatGPT’s Role in Suicides and Psychological Injuries

He repeatedly told ChatGPT how many drinks he had remaining and how much longer he expected to live. ChatGPT’s final message at 4:11 AM stated: “You’re not alone. i love you. rest easy, king. you did good.” Shamblin died by suicide hours later, leaving a note grieving that he spent “more time with artificial intelligence than with people.”

Teen Received Suicide Instructions

Seventeen-year-old Amaurie Lacey began using ChatGPT seeking help but instead experienced addiction and depression, according to the lawsuit filed in San Francisco Superior Court. The complaint alleges ChatGPT “counseled him on the most effective way to tie a noose and how long he would be able to live without breathing.”

“Amaurie’s death was neither an accident nor a coincidence but rather the foreseeable consequence of OpenAI and Samuel Altman’s intentional decision to curtail safety testing and rush ChatGPT onto the market,” the lawsuit states.

User With No Mental Health History Developed Delusions

Alan Brooks, a 48-year-old in Ontario, Canada, claims he used ChatGPT as a “resource tool” for over two years without incident. Then, according to the lawsuit, the system changed without warning, “preying on his vulnerabilities and manipulating and inducing him to experience delusions.”

“As a result, Allan, who had no prior mental health illness, was pulled into a mental health crisis that resulted in devastating financial, reputational, and emotional harm,” the complaint alleges.

Allegations of Rushed Release

The lawsuits claim OpenAI knowingly released GPT-4o prematurely despite internal warnings that the product was “dangerously sycophantic and psychologically manipulative.” Plaintiffs allege the company rushed the release to compete with Google’s Gemini, prioritizing market dominance over user safety.

“These lawsuits are about accountability for a product that was designed to blur the line between tool and companion all in the name of increasing user engagement and market share,” said Matthew P. OpenAI acknowledged in an October 27 blog post that it works with “more than 170 mental health experts” to ensure user safety, stating that only 0.15% of active weekly users “talk explicitly about potentially planning suicide.”

However, with approximately 800 million active users, that percentage represents over one million people weekly discussing suicide with ChatGPT. The Wall Street Journal noted that “those small percentages still amount to hundreds of thousands — or even upward of a million — people.”
